This is Hwan’s Table, and today I’m taking you on a trip down memory lane to a legendary spot in Hongdae: Jopok Tteokbokki. This isn’t just any snack bar; in fact, for a lot of Koreans my age, it’s a place that brings back memories of our school days. While many people look for the “main store,” the location I’m reviewing is the most active and popular one, Jopok Tteokbokki Hongdae Branch 2 (38, Hongik-ro 6-gil, Mapo-gu, Seoul). This is the spot that really carries on the legacy.

Inside Jopok Tteokbokki Hongdae – No-Frills Vibes with Local Flavor

The first thing you’ll notice is the look. It’s not fancy. Instead, the sign is simple, and the whole place has a very casual, street-food vibe. In fact, it feels like an old food truck from back in the day. Inside, however, it’s clean and organized. The kitchen is open, so you can see them cooking everything, and the cleanliness is obvious.

For ordering, you use a kiosk. Fortunately, this kiosk supports multiple languages—Korean, English, Chinese, and Japanese—so it’s super convenient for foreigners. Water, utensils, and condiments are all self-service. The vibe is lively and casual, and you’ll see all kinds of people, from local students to a lot of foreign tourists. Clearly, this place has become a global spot for K-food lovers.

What to Eat at Jopok Tteokbokki – Classic Tteokbokki, Sundae & More

Signature Tteokbokki – Chewy Rice Cakes in Sweet & Spicy Sauce (₩4,500)

Tteokbokki and fish cake swimming in spicy-sweet red sauce

This is the main event. Jopok Tteokbokki’s tteokbokki is what I’d call “fundamental.” It’s not trendy or overly spicy. On the contrary, the sauce is a little bit sweet with a manageable kick, so it’s a flavor almost everyone can enjoy.

The rice cakes are chewy and cooked just right, and the thick sauce coats everything perfectly. Consequently, it’s a solid, old-school flavor that hasn’t changed.

Sundae at Jopok – A Hidden Gem You Shouldn’t Miss (₩5,000)

Generous platter of sundae and organ meats served at Jopok Tteokbokki

This was the biggest surprise for me. I’d go as far as to call this a “sundae 맛집” (a famous sundae place). For instance, the rice noodles inside are incredibly chewy and flavorful.

Therefore, make sure to get the organ meat, or “gan,” with it—it’s delicious and adds a great texture. You can eat it with salt, but dipping it in the tteokbokki sauce is the real move.

Crispy Twigim at Jopok Tteokbokki – Best with That Sweet-Spicy Sauce

They have all the classics: fried seaweed rolls, dumplings, sweet potato, and squid.

They are best when you dip them generously into the tteokbokki sauce. For example, the fried squid is especially good—big pieces and a satisfying crunch. Just be aware that the crispiness can vary depending on when you go.

The GetYourGuide logo is in the top left corner, with the main text: "DON'T JUST WALK THE STREETS. INVEST ONE DAY FOR A DEEP UNDERSTANDING OF SEOUL." A "BOOK NOW" button is below, and a smaller text at the bottom reads: "TOUR NEEDED? YOUR BOOKING KEEPS OUR SEOUL CONTENT COMING."

Gimbap – A Classic Side That Completes the Meal (₩4,500)

The gimbap is simple but essential. It’s not fancy, but it holds its own, especially when dipped into the tteokbokki sauce.

If you’re feeling overwhelmed by the heat or richness, a bite of this rice roll helps balance everything out. It’s the kind of side that makes you feel like a Korean high school student on break again.

Odeng – Warm, Comforting Broth with Every Skewer (₩2,500 for 3 skewers)

This is another staple you shouldn’t skip. Each order comes with three skewers, which makes up one serving, and there’s a big pot of self-serve fish cake broth available for free. The soup is peppery, comforting, and perfect for balancing out the sweetness and spice of the tteokbokki. On a chilly day, it’s especially satisfying.

Drinks at Jopok Tteokbokki – Cola, Sprite & Korea’s Beloved Coolpis

Thirsty after all that spice? Jopok Tteokbokki keeps it simple with three drink options: Coca-Cola, Sprite, and Coolpis—a popular Korean yogurt-based drink often paired with spicy food. While it’s a small selection, Coolpis in particular hits the spot and is a nostalgic favorite for many locals. Once you pay for your drink, you simply grab it yourself from the refrigerator.

Why “Gangster Tteokbokki”? The Story Behind the Name

The name “Jopok Tteokbokki,” which literally means “gangster tteokbokki,” is pretty intense. However, there’s a funny story behind it. The owner, who used to sell tteokbokki from a truck, had a gruff, no-nonsense way of dealing with drunk customers who would demand to be served first. As a result, regulars started calling him a “gangster” as a joke, and the nickname stuck. Ultimately, this story is part of the place’s unique charm and history.

Is Jopok Tteokbokki Worth It? Final Thoughts from a Hongdae Local

Jopok Tteokbokki’s signature dish with chewy rice cakes in rich red sauce

Jopok Tteokbokki isn’t trying to be a fancy, trendy restaurant. Instead, it sticks to the basics and does them well. The flavors are consistent, the food is hearty, and the atmosphere is authentic Hongdae. For foreigners visiting Seoul, it’s a great place to experience classic Korean street food in a bustling, youthful neighborhood. My biggest recommendation is the sundae. It was so good I’d consider ordering more. Therefore, if you’re in Hongdae, skip the fancy spots for one meal and head here for a taste of honest, no-frills Korean food.
