Nami Island Day Trip: From Seoul to Nami, Detailed Guide & Diary

You know those days when you wake up in Seoul and just crave a total change of scenery? That intense craving for some fresh air, stunning views, and a little bit of magic? Yep, that was me last Saturday. The city is amazing, but sometimes, my soul just screams for a breather. And that’s exactly how my Nami Island day trip came to life – from an early morning alarm in my Seoul apartment to a super late, but totally worth it, return! Come along for the ride and plan your own incredible island escape!

☀️ 7:00 AM: Seoul Morning & My Day Begins!

A 7 AM weekend alarm is usually my enemy, but for this adventure, I was up! Essentials packed, coffee in hand, I felt a thrilling anticipation as Seoul awoke. “Nami Island, here I come!” I whispered, ready for the perfect day.

Phase 1: Hopping on the ITX-Cheongchun Train (My Express Ticket!)

This is your direct line! I usually hop on the ITX from either Yongsan Station or Cheongnyangni Station in Seoul. Both are super well-connected to various subway lines, making the start of your journey incredibly convenient. You just settle into the comfy seats, and before you know it, you’re pulling into Gapyeong Station – your gateway to island bliss! It’s such a smooth escape from the city buzz, making this visit feel like a true getaway.

My #TravelHack (Crucial for a Smooth Day Trip!): I cannot stress this enough: BOOK YOUR ITX TICKETS IN ADVANCE! Seriously, I tried to wing it once on a long weekend and nearly got stuck. Go to the Korail website (www.letskorail.com) or download the ‘KorailTalk’ app on your phone. Book it as soon as your date for the outing is set! It’s a lifesaver, especially for popular routes like Gapyeong.

The train ride itself was so relaxing. Comfy seats, big windows, and watching the city scape slowly melt into mountains and rivers was pure bliss. I popped in my headphones, listened to my favorite travel playlist, and just enjoyed the anticipation of my island visit. About an hour later, the announcement for Gapyeong Station chimed, and I felt a little surge of excitement!

🌳 9:00 AM: Arriving in Gapyeong & Ferry Anticipation!

Stepping off the ITX at Gapyeong Station, the air already felt crisper, cleaner – a stark contrast to Seoul’s city air! The station itself is super cute and clearly geared for tourists embarking on their adventure.

Next Stop: Nami Island Wharf! (My City Tour Bus Choice!)

Gapyeong City Tour Bus stop near Nami Island

From Gapyeong Station, you need to get to the Nami Island ferry wharf. While I didn’t actually visit other spots on this specific journey (I was just too enchanted by Nami!), I still found the Gapyeong City Tour Bus to be an excellent choice for getting directly to the wharf.

  • Why I Loved It (Even for Nami-Only!): For just 8,000 KRW (adults), I got a hop-on, hop-off ticket for the whole day! Even if you only use it for Nami Island, it’s a super convenient and direct ride from the station to the wharf (about 20 minutes). It was really simple to use, avoiding the need to figure out local bus routes. Plus, it gives you the flexibility to decide on the fly if you do want to explore other spots like Petite France or the Garden of Morning Calm later! (Always check their schedule on the Gapyeong County Cultural Tourism website (www.gptour.go.kr) beforehand – they’re pretty regular, but good to know for your timing!)
  • (Side note on other buses: Yes, there are regular local city buses that go to the wharf, but the City Tour Bus is generally recommended for tourists due to its direct route and convenience. Taxis are also a quick option, about 5-10 minutes from the station!)

The Final Leg: Ferry to Nami Island! (Hello, Adventure!)

Once I got to the Gapyeong Wharf, the excitement was palpable! There were groups of friends, couples, and families, all buzzing with anticipation for their island adventure.

  • Tickets: You buy your Nami Island admission ticket right at the ticket office. The best part? The round-trip ferry fare is already included! So for around 16,000 KRW, you’re all set for island exploration and your ride there and back. (Just a quick tip: prices can sometimes change, so a super-fast peek at the official Nami Island website before you leave Seoul is always a smart move for your visit!)

The ferry ride itself is short – maybe 5-10 minutes – but it’s such a fun transition. The breeze on my face, the views of the river, and seeing Nami Island get closer and closer… I could practically feel the magic drawing me in for my ultimate escape!

  • Feeling Daring? The Zipline Call! (My Next Nami Island Plan! 😉) Okay, if you want to make an epic, heart-pounding entrance for your island visit, you HAVE to consider the Zipline that goes directly from the Gapyeong Wharf to Nami Island! It looked absolutely insane in the best way possible – soaring high above the Bukhangang River, you land right on the island. My jaw dropped watching people do it! (It’s an extra charge, obviously, and if you’re going on a busy day, definitely book your zipline slot in advance because it’s wildly popular!) I’m already planning my next visit just for this!

☀️ 10:00 AM – 1:00 PM: Exploring Nami Island’s Morning Beauty!

Stepping onto Nami Island felt like entering a whole new world. It’s so beautifully maintained, almost like a giant, whimsical park. My first impression on this trip: “This is even prettier than the pictures!”

First Stop: The Iconic Metasequoia Lane! (And My Photo Frenzy!)

The iconic Metasequoia Lane during a Nami Island day trip, with people walking under tall trees

I knew exactly where I was headed first: the legendary Metasequoia Lane. You HAVE to see this. Those incredibly tall, straight trees just form this perfect, dramatic pathway. It’s famous for a reason (hello, “Winter Sonata” vibes!), and I spent a good chunk of time just walking, breathing it all in, and yes, posing for way too many photos! The light filtering through the leaves was just chef’s kiss. It was the highlight of my morning adventure.

Next, I wandered over to Ginkgo Tree Lane. Since it was spring, it was a beautiful lush green, but I could totally imagine how breathtaking it would be in autumn, completely covered in golden leaves. I made a mental note to plan another visit for the fall!

My Mid-Morning Boost: Biking Around Nami Island!

To truly soak it all in, I decided to rent a bike. They have everything – single bikes (which I got!), tandem bikes for couples, and even multi-person family bikes. The paths are so flat and well-maintained, it was pure joy just pedaling around, feeling the breeze, and discovering little hidden corners. I zipped past charming art installations and quiet riverside spots. It was fantastic and made this journey even more memorable!

⏰ 1:00 PM – 2:00 PM: Lunch Break & Refuel!

After all that biking and walking, my stomach was definitely rumbling! Nami Island has a few cute spots to eat. I decided to try the Nami Island Dosirak (Lunchbox). It’s so nostalgic and fun! They give you a classic tin lunchbox, and you literally shake it yourself to mix up the rice and side dishes. It was a simple, hearty, and surprisingly delicious meal – perfect for a quick refuel to keep exploring the island!

☀️ 2:00 PM – 4:00 PM: Discovering Nami’s Hidden Gems!

Energized, I spent the afternoon exploring the less crowded areas. I stumbled upon the Song Museum and a small art gallery, taking a moment to appreciate the cultural side of the island. It’s amazing how much art is just seamlessly integrated into the natural landscape. This was a lovely part of my visit.

I also found the “Naminara Republic” passport office! It’s such a quirky concept – Nami Island basically declares itself an independent republic, and you can get an “immigrant visa” (a souvenir passport). It just added to the whimsical charm of the place, making my visit even more unique!

I even saw people trying out the Sky-Bike, an elevated rail bike that looked super thrilling, giving a unique view from above. I decided to save that for my next island adventure, along with the zipline!

🌅 4:00 PM – 5:30 PM: Wrapping Up My Nami Island Day Trip!

As the afternoon sun started to dip, painting the sky in soft hues, I reluctantly made my way back to the ferry. The island had truly worked its magic on this Nami Island day trip.

  • Ferry Back: The ferry ride back to the Gapyeong Wharf felt a little bittersweet, but I was already planning my next visit!
  • Back to Gapyeong Station: From the wharf, I hopped back on the Gapyeong City Tour Bus (so easy!) and was back at Gapyeong Station in no time. The station was a bit busier now, with fellow day-trippers heading home from their own island adventures.

🌙 5:30 PM – 7:00 PM: The Chill Ride Home to Seoul After My Nami Island Day Trip!

By around 7:00 PM, I was pulling back into Cheongnyangni Station in Seoul. The city lights were twinkling, and the familiar urban hum enveloped me. Though my legs were a little tired, my heart was full. This Nami Island day trip had been a resounding success!

My Nami Island Day Trip Verdict: 10/10, Would Recommend!

Honestly, my Nami Island day trip from Seoul was everything I hoped for and more. It felt like a true escape, a perfect blend of nature, art, and gentle adventure. If you’re looking for a refreshing break from the city, pack your bag, book that ITX ticket, and go! This Nami Island day trip truly leaves you feeling recharged and ready for whatever Seoul throws at you next!
