Thinking of exploring Korea beyond the usual tourist spots? As a local, I’m always thrilled to share the real gems! Welcome to Hwan’s Table, your insider’s guide. This vibrant country has so much to offer. Indeed, our latest find in Ikseondong is one you won’t want to miss: Oncheonjip.

A person in a denim jacket and black pants walks away from the viewer down a narrow, traditional street in Seoul, flanked by a white brick wall and a distant view of other pedestrians. The GetYourGuide logo is in the top left corner, with the main text: "DON'T JUST WALK THE STREETS. INVEST ONE DAY FOR A DEEP UNDERSTANDING OF SEOUL." A "BOOK NOW" button is below, and a smaller text at the bottom reads: "TOUR NEEDED? YOUR BOOKING KEEPS OUR SEOUL CONTENT COMING."

Ikseondong: Where History Meets Hip

Nestled in Seoul’s Jongno district, Ikseondong is an old, charming hanok (traditional Korean house) village. Its traditional houses are intimately packed and quite distinct. Urban regeneration transformed it. Consequently, it’s now a trendy ‘Newtro’ hotspot. Furthermore, unique shops and eateries bustle here. Within these delightful alleys sits Oncheonjip. Its beautiful hanok exterior and signature ‘hot spring’ pool instantly captivate. This sets a unique mood before you even step inside.

Oncheonjip: An Aesthetic Haven

Stepping into Oncheonjip is like entering a tranquil oasis. This renovated hanok beautifully incorporates a “hot spring” theme. It offers unique visual and emotional immersion for diners.

Captivating Hanok Exterior & “Hot Spring” Welcome

From the moment you arrive, Oncheonjip’s charm is undeniable. Its exterior boasts traditional hanok beauty.

Notably, the signature “hot spring” pool by the entrance truly catches your eye. This unique water feature is visible through full-length windows. It perfectly embodies the “Oncheonjip” (hot spring house) concept. It creates a captivating first impression, especially when adorned by snow in winter.

Cozy Interior Ambiance & Attentive Service

Moving inside, the hanok’s traditional pillar structure is preserved. Soft, ambient lighting and subtle Japanese-inspired decor complement it. Consequently, this creates an incredibly cozy and atmospheric space.

Tatami-style seating inside Oncheonjip’s hanok room

Korean hanok aesthetics blend seamlessly with Japanese influences. This perfectly suits their shabu-shabu menu. There are 23-25 tables, which is quite a few. Still, the atmosphere remains pleasant, with suitable music for conversation.

It’s an exotic yet comfortable setting, adding a touch of “sensibility” to your dining experience. The staff at Oncheonjip are notably welcoming and attentive. You’ll find them eager to assist, particularly if you’re new to shabu-shabu. They provide helpful menu explanations. They even guide you through the cooking process. This thoughtful service truly enhances the overall dining experience. It makes you feel well-cared for in this unique setting.

Smart Tips for Your Visit: Mastering the Wait

Oncheonjip is quite popular. Therefore, a wait is pretty common. However, you can often skip the queue. Use Catchtable or Naver Reservations. These are available for lunch at 11:30 AM and dinner at 5:00 PM. It’s definitely worth checking those out. This ensures a smooth arrival!

The tables aren’t super spacious. They can feel a bit snug once all your food is laid out, especially when refilling broth. Still, the overall vibe makes it worth it. It’s great for a date or a casual gathering focused on ambiance. It’s certainly a spot where “visual satisfaction” often outweighs “practical spaciousness.” This is pretty typical for popular Instagram-worthy places in Seoul!

Oncheonjip’s 3-Tier Miso Shabu: A Feast for the Eyes and Palate

Now, let’s talk about the star of the show: Oncheonjip’s signature 3-Tier Miso Shabu-Shabu. This isn’t just a meal; instead, it’s an artistic presentation. It delights both your eyes and your taste buds.

The shabu-shabu ingredients are beautifully arranged. They come in a traditional 3-tier lacquered box (like a bento box). This makes for incredibly “Instagrammable” plating. Additionally, for extra cuteness, two adorable little bears made of broth sit atop your hotpot. They slowly melt into the delicious soup. This is a signature Oncheonjip detail that instantly makes you smile!

Here’s what you’ll find in each tier:

  • Tier 1: Delicately thin slices of fresh shabu-shabu meat are perfectly arranged. The meat is lean, flavorful, and won’t leave you feeling weighed down.
  • Tier 2: A vibrant assortment of fresh vegetables fills this tier. You’ll find mushrooms, Napa cabbage, bok choy, and tofu. These add depth to the broth. They also balance out the richness of the meat. The freshness and neat arrangement highlight the quality.
  • Tier 3: Your accompanying sauces are here! You’ll get an egg, a savory soy sauce, and a zesty chili sauce. These allow you to customize each bite. They add a delightful variety of flavors to your shabu-shabu experience.

The shabu-shabu broth itself is incredibly clean, subtle, and not overly stimulating. It’s perfect if you prefer a lighter, more authentic taste over super bold flavors. Just a quick dip of the meat and veggies in this delicate broth. It allows their natural flavors to shine through. This creates a truly rich and satisfying taste.

Completing Your Oncheonjip Feast: Noodles & a Delicious DIY Finish

After savoring all the tender meat and fresh vegetables in the flavorful broth, you might wonder what’s next. At Oncheonjip, the meal typically progresses with kal-guksu (knife-cut noodles). These are provided for you to cook right in the rich remaining broth.

A helpful staff tip: gently whisk in egg whites into the noodles as they cook. Ultimately, this simple trick truly enhances their flavor and texture!

Now, for those accustomed to a hearty porridge (jook) or fried rice ending, it’s important to note: Oncheonjip doesn’t officially offer these as menu items for the finale. We were a little surprised. But we were also determined!

Since the doenjang broth was so incredibly delicious (its initially strong aroma might be a bit rich for some), we decided to take matters into our own hands. We requested two portions of plain rice and a dash of sesame oil. And voilà – our very own, impromptu shabu-shabu jook!

In fact, let me tell you, this homemade creation was absolutely delicious and incredibly satisfying! The rich, savory doenjang broth infused into the rice. Just a hint of sesame oil made it truly unforgettable. Not having this delicious jook would have been a real missed opportunity. It perfectly rounded off the meal. It proved just how flavorful that broth really is.

Beyond Shabu-Shabu: Other Tempting Bites

While my personal focus for this visit was on their incredible shabu-shabu, I thoroughly researched other options. I chatted with friends who’ve been here. Discussions with the staff also provided insight. Furthermore, observing what other tables were enjoying gave me a fuller picture of Oncheonjip’s diverse offerings. These options are highly-regarded for rounding out your meal. They can also serve as a standalone feast.

Beyond their signature Oncheonjip Miso Shabu (with your choice of brisket or chuck roll), for instance, you’ll also find their adorable Oncheon Gom Shabu (featuring the cute polar bear broth – ‘gom’ means bear in Korean!). For those who enjoy a kick, the Oncheonjip Spicy Shabu offers a refreshing, Korean-style spicy broth. Another popular choice is the Black Angus Chuck Roll Sukiyaki. This is a traditional sukiyaki with a savory-sweet soy base. If you prefer a vegetarian option or a lighter broth, the Mushroom Shabu boasts a deep, clean flavor from dried mushrooms and kelp.

Furthermore, for sides or full meals, based on what I’ve gathered, you might consider:

Crispy mushroom tempura served at Oncheonjip
  • Assorted Tempura: A crispy selection of pumpkin, oyster mushrooms, peppers, shrimp, and squid. Despite a decent coating, they’re surprisingly filling. Reviews often highlight the pepper tempura. It has surprisingly flavorful stuffing, resembling a mini dumpling!
Savory Korean pancake topped with greens and dipping sauce
  • Minari Yukjeon (Pan-fried Beef with Water Parsley): This dish brings together fragrant minari (water parsley) and beef. It offers a rich, flavorful experience.

Oncheonjip also offers some unique beverages. This includes their signature Oncheonjip Soda (available in peach, yuja, or green tangerine). There’s also the distinctively fragrant Yuja Makgeolli. It’s a traditional rice wine infused with citrus. These options really show Oncheonjip’s commitment. They offer a full “dining experience.” It perfectly complements Ikseondong’s “Newtro” and fusion vibe.
